Chapter 38

After Roo had settled into the guest room for the night, Enid called Josh. “Hey, babe,” he answered. “Good to hear your voice.”

“Can you come over? Roo’s in the guest room, but we can talk on the porch. I guess I just need to see you.”

“I can be there in about an hour. That too late?”

“No, I’ve got an article I can work on until then.”

About forty-five minutes later, Josh pulled into the driveway. Enid tapped on Roo’s door. “Josh and I will be outside. I wanted to let you know in case you heard voices.”

“Don’t worry, I’ve gone deaf suddenly,” Roo called through the closed door. “I can’t hear a thing you’re saying.”

Enid smiled. Roo was like the sister she had always wished she had. A little impetuous, but that was part of her charm. Enid opened the door and wrapped her arms around Josh. “Oh, God, I’ve missed you so much.”

“I’ve missed you, too. Come on, I’ve got a six pack of Coors in a cooler on the porch.”

“Sounds good. Want me to bring anything to munch on?”

“No, beer and you. That’s all I need right now, but not in that order.”

They settled into the two wicker chairs on the small porch. Josh pulled Enid’s chair as close to his as he could and then popped the lid of a beer and handed it to her. “I know beer’s not your favorite drink, but it’s all I had.”

She sipped the foam from the top of the can. “Tonight, it’s perfect.”

Josh took a long drink and laid his head back in the rocker, closing his eyes.

“You look tired. Is it the new job?”

Josh sat up and smiled. “More like the new boss.”

Enid took Josh’s hand. “It’s me again, isn’t it? Otherwise, you’d just brush it off.”

Josh pulled her hand up to his face and kissed it. “I have a feeling if it wasn’t you, there’d be something else.” He paused. “I may have made a mistake taking this job.”

“I suppose it’s too late to tell the governor you’ve changed your mind. The last thing I’d want to do is become a problem for your career, but if you’re not happy, you need to get out.”

“And do what? I don’t think the acting sheriff will just move aside so I can go back to my old job.” Josh turned up his beer can and finished it off and then took another one from the cooler. “It’s at least a two-beer night. But I’m tired of talking about my situation. I’ll figure it out. You sounded upset or worried when you called. What’s going on?”

She told Josh about Belinda and her and Roo’s conversation with Deputy Hyatt. “I know you can’t get involved, but I just don’t have a good feeling that the Bowman County sheriff’s office will make this a priority. Have you heard anything that would suggest Catherine could be a victim of a gang?”

“Larkin asked the same thing. My gut tells me no. When the first murder happened, that young man, he was left on full display.
